Originating from the Ilocos region of Northern Philippines, Abel Iloko is a hand woven fabric from individual cotton threads interwoven from centuries-old looms. “Abel” is the Ilocano vernacular for “weave,” and “Inabel” refers to the finished textile. Inabel is known for being durable and resistant to shrinking and fading and has been historically used as sails by the legendary Spanish Armada. Today, the Abel Iloko tradition thrives among communities of elderly women who continue the proud custom of creating these sturdy and sensational heirloom cloths. Like the inherent spirit of the Filipino, the Abel Iloko is resilient, indomitable, cordially warm, and infinitely colorful.
