Polytechnic University of the Philippines is a coeducational, research state university located in Santa Mesa, Manila, Philippines. It was founded on October 19, 1904 as the Manila Business School. The university is ruled by Republic Act Number 8292, or the Higher Education Modernization Act of 1997. PUP has a total of 71,963 students enrolled, and it has 25 branches and campuses located in Metro Manila, Northern and Central Luzon, and in Southern Luzon.PUP is known as the "Poor Man's University," where the economically challenged and other marginalized people study. It has the lowest tuition fee among all universities in the Philippines at 12 pesos per academic unit, a rate that has remained unchanged since 1979. However, with the passage of Republic Act 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act in 2017, students from all State Universities and Colleges in the country will have a subsidized tuition, effectively making PUP tuition-free. Aside from the free tuition, PUP is also known for establishing the first railway academy in Southeast Asia, having the most sought-out graduates in the country, and student activism.PUP's athletic team is known as the Mighty Maroons and plays in the National Capital Region Conference of the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association . The team also plays in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities since 2013. Its official volleyball team, the PUP Lady Radicals, plays in the Shakey's V-League.
