More about Mapúa University

Founded on 25 January 1925 by Don Tomas Mapúa, an architecture graduate of Cornell University in the United States, and the first registered architect of the Philippines, Mapúa University is the premier Philippine engineering school. It is located in Intramuros, Manila, and in Makati City and runs Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) in Southern Luzon and Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) in Pandacan, Manila.

Mapúa envisions itself to be among the best universities in the world, unceasingly fostering its tradition of excellence in engineering, architecture, information technology, business, and social sciences education. It provides students a learning environment that will make them globally competitive, engaging in economically viable research, development, and innovation to provide state-of-the-art solutions to problems of industries and communities. This has borne fruit in the University’s consistently producing topnotchers in different professional licensure examinations

At the turn of the century, the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC), headed by the late Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco, took over the ownership of Mapúa with the vision of it being the leader in producing local graduates who offer world-class professional services in the global economy of today.

Thus, with Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, the third and present University President at the helm, Mapúa became the first school in the entire East Asia to obtain accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org) for eleven of its engineering programs; and accreditation from the ABET Computing Accreditation for two of its computing programs. The University has continuously formed international linkages with prestigious companies and universities for research and development purposes, and international on-the-job trainings to prepare its students for the world of practice.

In 2016, Mapúa, in line with the country’s transition to a K to 12 system of basic education, opened its doors to Senior High School students, applying the same high quality of education that the Institute is known for.

Mapúa SHS offers all the four strands of the Academic Track – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Strand (STEM); Accountancy and Business Management Strand (ABM); Humanities and Social Sciences Strand (HUMSS); and General Academic Strand (GAS).

On May 18, 2017, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted a university status to Mapúa as a result of a protracted process of quality enhancement in Mapúa education of research capacity building.

Continuing its efforts to bolster the University’s world-class quality of education, Mapúa has strategized an advancement of its game plan envisioning itself as a digital, research-driven, outcomes-based, international domain (DROID) in response to globalization and the explosion of knowledge.
