More about Local Government Unit of Giporlos

MAYOR: MARK S. BIONG

Giporlos is now 68 years old, with a total land area of 10,630.0 hectares or 106.3 square km. and has a population of 13,308 as of CY 2007 Population Census of the National Statistics Office. A Municipality with main sources of income from coconut industry, fishing, subsistence farming, government employment, commerce and trade. For the Local Government Unit: Tax Revenue on Real Property Taxes, Internal Revenue Allotment and other local revenues.

It is a coastal municipality and strategically located at the center of the southwestern part of Eastern Samar. A coconut producing town, and other leading agricultural products like root crops, rice and corn.

There are 11 barangay schools; eight of them are complete elementary schools. The Giporlos Central School has 30 teachers. There are two secondary schools: Giporlos National Trade School and the Malabag National High School.

From a remote town, Giporlos has transformed into a new face and is continuously transforming and it is through the effort of the late Mayor, Hon. Mateo S. Biong Jr. who in his first term demolished the old dilapidated Municipal Hall Building for him to construct a new Municipal Hall Building (2002-2004). And now the new state of the art masterpiece of his time stood still and is one considered landmark of the place.

Other major projects credited to the “great master builder” of this town is the construction of municipal roads, barangay roads most especially that of Barangay Gigoso and presidential bridges connecting the farm-to-market roads in the upland barangays. The on-going opening/widening/concreting of the circumferential farm-to-market road connecting the four upland barangays namely, President Roxas, Huknan, San Miguel, Sta. Cruz as well as the poblacion barangays. He is also responsible in the construction of new Municipal Port, the domeslike New MSB-Multi-purpose covered court, the construction/rehabilitation of 38-classrooms school buildings and the on-going Level III Water System, the major breakthrough of his administration as it will benefit the entire poblacion and the regular barangays.

At present, the town is headed by a young, dynamic and innovative leader, Hon. Mark S. Biong. Inspired by his father, the late Hon. Mateo S. Biong, Jr.’s achievements in his nine years of public service he was convinced to ran for mayor to continue what his father has started. Though he was challenged by time brought about by the tragic death of his father, as the new chief executive it did not stop him from sourcing funds for him to implement his priority projects.

Giporlos with its swift transformation in the last decade has made this place made known not only to our neighboring municipalities but to the entire country as well not to mention that of other countries where our “Kababayans” are continuously making it known and with the many town’s accomplishment it now became the Giporlosanon’s pride.
