More about La Milagrosa Academy Alumni

It was in 1970 during the incumbency of the late Most Rev. Pablo Singzon, D.D. as bishop of Calbayog when Academia de la Milagrosa was dounded with the Daughters of Charity of St. St. Vincent de Paul as administrators. There were only seven grades from Grade One to Grade Seven with Spanish as the medium of instruction. This was from 1910 to 1922.

When Most Rev. Sofronio G. Hacbang, D.D. became the bishop of Calbayog, the Daughters of Charity left in 1972, so that the Sister of Bishop Hacbang, Miss Dolores Hacbang became the directress of Milagrosa. This time the high school department for girls only was opened, up to the third year high school. The administration of the Hacbang was from 1927 to 1935, when the Dominican Sisters of Sienna came to Calbayog as the administrator of the school. During the school year 1950-1941, fourth year high school for girls was opened. There were only 24 girls in the fourth year class who graduated as first Milagrosinians graduates.

World War II broke out December 8, 1941. The schools were closed. In 1942, during the Japanese regime, the Japanese had the schools opened. Academia de la Milagrosa opened with Sor Luisa Henson, O.P. as the Directr4ess but she was replaced by Sor Teresita Hacbang, O.P. who went to Manila with other public school teachers who were delegated to study Niponngo, the Japanese Language. That time Milagrosa enrolled boys so that the school became co-education. That was the beginning of having boys and girls in Milagrosa. The Elementary Department was also opened but only from Grade Three to Grade Six. All these wer recognized by the government. The school continued to function until peace time under the administration of the Dominican Sisters of Sienna.

In 1989, the Dominican sisters left. The Diocese of Calbayog took over with Mr. Gregorio M. Tarrayo as the Principal. School Board of Directors were appointed by Archbishop Pedro R. Dean who was then administrator of Calbayog Diocese, S.V. and at the same time the Archbishop of Palo. This was the period of transition and sacrifice for Milagrosa but the School Board did its best to uplift Milagrosa until such time when Most Rev. Maximaino T. Cruz appointed a priest Fr. Anton Z. Verzosa as Director of t he School. The members of the School Board made a courtesy resignation. No School Board was appointed since then up to present.

When Fr. Anton Z. Verzosa was conferred the title of Monsignor and was assigned as Parish Priest of Basey, Samar. Fr. Medardo A. Durmiendo, O.A.R. wa appointed Director of the school by Most Rev. Maximiano T. Cruz, D.D.S.T.D. but he didn't stay long because the superior of their order recalled him for good. So, on April 24, 2000, Most Rev. Jose S. Palma, D.D., S.T.D. appointed Dr. Alejandro T. Catalan Ph. D. as Director of the school.

Milagrosa had its crisis, its ups and downs, but with the guidance of Mama Mary our deaprest helpful Mother it has survived and is now improving little by little in its physical aspects and more importantly it its mission to give quality education and christian values to its students. Mama Mary i n the name of Milagrosa is our refuge and hope as we look forward to the third millenium.
