Graceland Dragonfruit Farm Gardens—heading in the right direction. At first, we started looking at different options for a low-stress, low-risk reasonably safe “Investment” to provide for us in our upcoming retirement—at the same time being able to self-manage said investment and know what position our investment is in at all times. We had in the past few years made several investments with mixed success. After looking a various options, we decided that dragonfruit may be the way forward for us. Ken having been a successful farmer in his homeland New Zealand, had for many years managed dairy farms milking up to 1500 cows on 400 hectares. And Grace being the country manager of an international company operating here in Manila, we pursue this dragonfruit farming. We found our little piece of paradise in Nasugbu, Batangas after looking at many places throughout the Philippines. Noted requirements in our search were: 1) Location-- Distance to a large market in which both sell our produce and be able to buy and transport needed supplies. 2) Clean Title --as most of you will be aware purchasing land in the Philippines is fraught with problems. 3) Good stable supply of easy to access water. 4) Flood-free as we intended from the beginning to grow DRAGONFRUITS. 5) Road condition wasn’t seen as overly important as we have a 4WD pick-up. How time flies—its been now 16 months since we started to develop our farm—and we are delighted to say we have been more successful than we had any right to hope:-), midway through our first fruiting, we had already produced many more fruits than we had budgeted on for the whole season. By using a mix of modern tech and many research, we have been able, not only to head toward successful retirement income but also help many others along the way, both local farmers and fellow dragonfruit growers in central Luzon. We hope our success will inspire others to use farming as a retirement investment and along the way help those less fortunate than ourselves. You don’t need to start off in big way like we did, just do it at your own speed spending what you can afford and never borrow money to invest. We have grown and continue to grow by investing in modern tech and doing our own research and experimenting—we encourage others to do the same as what may work in our area may not work in yours. New challenges arise on a daily basis and while it can at times be very demanding, we seek constant improvements to increase the quality of our produce and the service rendered to our many regular customers. We don’t, and never will consider ourselves to be experts in the production of DragonFruit but seek constant improvement through investment and research including learning from methods used in other countries and seeking to adapt them to work best for us.
