More about DLSHSI-College of Humanities and Sciences

History

Established in 2014, the College of Humanities and Sciences is among the most recent colleges in De La Salle Health Sciences Institute, along with the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medical Laboratory Science. It offers the three-year trimestral BS Biochemistry program with a two-year accelerated medicine track, the first accelerated medicine program with a strong chemistry preparation in the Philippines.

It was previously known as the General Education Department which housed various clusters in the fields of languages, literature, natural sciences, philosophy, religious education, social sciences, and physical education. In 2013, the various clusters were merged into two major integrated clusters – Integrated Humanities and Integrated Sciences and later turned into three departments namely: the Integrated Humanities, Integrated Sciences and the Chemistry and Biochemistry. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department has been established and separated from the Integrated Sciences due to the offering of the BS Biochemistry program. In 2015, the three (3) departments have been restructured to only two (2) departments namely: Integrated Humanities and Sciences headed by a chair and the Chemistry headed by a Program Director. The College of Humanities and Sciences also serves as a servicing college to other undergraduate colleges in the institution for their GE courses.

Description of the Logo

The human head represents the humanities side in a health sciences institution like the DLSHSI. This includes the Languages and Literature, Social Sciences, Philosophy, Religious Education, Behavioral Sciences, and Physical Education. It also symbolizes the brains and the human resources of the College of Humanities and Sciences which include its administration, pool of faculty, non-teaching personnel, students, and scholars.

The atomic model represents the branches of science that include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Technology, as building blocks of the universe. It also represents that science is a key foundation in education, research and innovation.

The DNA model represents the link between the natural sciences and the medical sciences. Just as the atom is the foundation of the universe, the DNA is a molecule that contains the genetic information necessary for the development of life. Biochemistry is the study of the molecules of life and the DNA model is a reminder of the key in understanding life itself and that knowledge about it can be utilized for the improvement of the society.

The open hands reaching out symbolize the commitment of the college to help, reach out and transform the lives of its students.

The open brown book with a quill symbolizes love for learning, innovation, research, and scholarship.

The Lasallian star placed at the center symbolizes the College’s sincere acknowledgment of the Lasallian Core Values: Spirit of Faith, Zeal of Service, Communion in Mission, and Reverence for Life, which serve as the light guiding all of its undertakings.

The year 2014 represents the initial period of establishment of the College.
