HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

It all started in 1973, when, Dr. Faustino Legaspi Uy opened the School of Nursing with the Graduate of Nursing (GN) Program using the Las Piñas General Hospital – that eventually became Dr. Faustino L. Uy Medical Foundation – as the clinical division.

Deeply obsessed with the idea of service to the community and to the people, Dr. Uy felt, and rightly so, that his magnificent obsession can be brought to full realization with health care and education working hand in hand. Thus, in 1975, Las Piñas College came into being.

Classes opened in June 1975 in its five-storey edifice in kindergarten, elementary, high school, nursing, the first two-years of Liberal Arts, vocational courses such as Automotive Mechanic, Dressmaking, Tailoring and One-Year General Clerical.

In 1977, the GN Program of the Nursing Course was phased out to give way to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. Likewise, the two-year Junior Secretarial Course was offered.

In June 1979, the first two years of Business Administration and Engineering, including the two-year Architectural Drafting, were offered with the blessing of the then Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS) – now, of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) together with Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), technical and vocational programs were also offered.

By School Year 1982-1983, the institution was allowed by the then Department of Education Culture and Sports to offer the two-year Hotel and Restaurant Management course. Also that year, the Doña Guillermina Building was completed and construction of the Administrative Building started.

Its founder envisioned the college to grow, expand and become a university. In preparation for this, LPC worked for and finally got the recognition permit for the graduate course in business, leading to a degree in Master in Business Administration.

Unfortunately, Dr. Legaspi Uy succumbed to cardiac arrest on October 19, 1986.

LPC is a living monument to the great and noble heart of Dr. Uy who founded it in the spirit of unselfish sharing what he was so generously endowed with in life to those who have less. This commitment to, and covenant with the youth is faithfully and devotedly carried out by his widow, Dr. Luz Co Uy, who has taken even more courageously the awesome responsibilities as the second president of the institution.

Under her management and supervision, Las Piñas College earned the recognition permits for Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and B.S. Civil Engineering from CHED in 1993; B.S. Mechanical Engineering and B.S. Accountancy; the Two-year Nursing Assistant course from TESDA in 1995; for B.S. HRM from CHED in 1996; Two-year Computer Secretarial from TESDA in 1997; Two-year Associate in Computer Technology from CHED in 1998; two-year Office Management from TESDA in 2000; certificate of accreditation for LPC to accept foreign students from the Bureau of Immigration in 2001; certificate of TVET Program Registration (NTR) for the Two-year Architectural Drafting course, Two-year Nursing Assistant course, Two-year Computer Secretarial course and Six-month Caregiver course NC - II from TESDA in 2002; and the Certificate of TVET Program Registration (WTR) for the Certificate in Caregiver NC - II in 2004.

PRESENT TIMES

Under the stewardship of executive vice president Marshall David Uy for School Year 2005-2006, the college had undergone major improvements.

The young but dynamic entrepreneur personally supervised the renovation of the airconditioned rooms for the kindergarten, administrative offices, faculty, and more classrooms.

Together with the energetic EVP is a team of competent professionals who are responsible for bringing into reality the vision of the new Las Piñas College. He provided another computer laboratory with Internet access for research and a fountain and landscaping of the promenade by the Dona Guillermina building. The construction of a more spacious library and canteen is going on.

In his desire to offer diverse curricular programs and answer the needs of students mostly coming from the south, he hired the services of consultants, and put up the laboratory and lecture rooms for the medical transcription course to open in June 2006.

COURSES OFFERED

The Allied Health Department of Las Piñas College offers the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing, two-year Midwifery course, two-year Nursing Aide, and the six-month Caregiver course. The department makes sure that students are provided with a strong foundation on health theories and skills coupled with the values of compassion, love and caring that makes one an ideal health worker. The faculty of instruction sees to it that in the process of learning, they strengthen the student’s capacity for right judgment and value system with integrity and a passion for truth and that professional holistic care is given to each client.

Students are exposed to various leading hospitals/community training centers and other health care entities for their related learning experience. Seminars and other development programs are held to update students on current issues and trends in health care education, research, and health care service. In-house review for graduating students in preparation for the Nurse Licensure Examination is given by a set of prominent nursing professionals. LPC was able to bag the ninth and 10th place in the Topnotcher’s List of the 1995 NLE.

LPC also offers five-year B.S. Industrial Engineering and B.S. Mechanical Engineering. It also has the four-year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Arts.

The college considers the Liberal Arts – offered with Economics, English, Political Science and Psychology as the fields of concentration – as a basic part of its effort to make the students cultured, educated and well-rounded. The faculty of instruction endeavors to mold each student into a complete person ready to reach out to people and prepared to take on the responsibilities as a member of society in this complex and rapidly changing world.

The modern Filipino cannot free himself completely from the influence and challenge of his economic, cultural, political, social and technological environment. Realizing this, these areas of concentration are studied not in isolation or as separate technical disciplines but are rather geared to that essential aspect of what it takes to be prepared to live and succeed in this very competitive world.

LPC offers courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with Majors in Management, Marketing, Banking and Finance, and Economics. Aside from homeroom learning, students are trained and developed on how to handle responsibilities through affiliation with various student organizations both within and outside the school.

Las Piñas College is a member of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities. The department administrators and faculty members are connected with AME, Philcoman, PACSB and other organizations.

In order for today’s students to be the best, they must have a complete understanding in numbers. Understanding what the numbers reveal, and what they do not reveal, allows business managers and investors to make every type of business decision.

The past few years have seen many calls for improving accounting education. The themes of these calls have been that the business world and accounting profession are changing rapidly; that the accountants of the past must become the premiere information professionals of the future; and that the accounting and business graduates need new skills and knowledge if they are to effectively meet tomorrow’s professional demand.

The B.S. Accountancy of LPC has maintained its noble vision since its inception in 1991 to educate, prepare, and produce not-so-many-but-quality certified public accountants.

On-the-job training program is incorporated in the course curriculum to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed as soon as they leave the portals of Las Piñas College. Moreover, the college has come up with placement bureau in coordination with industries, including but not limited to those within the cities of Parañaque, Muntinlupa and Las Piñas for the benefit of its graduates. Everyone is invited in the placement bureau to try it and get satisfied.

GRADUATE SCHOOL

In the light of philosophy and commitment of Las Piñas College to provide world class quality of education to students, it offers Master in Business Administration with three programs for commerce, non-commerce and marketing graduates.

LPC professors and consultants are equipped with a high degree of academic preparation and expertise in their line of specialization. The supreme objectives of the Graduate School involves developing the students with high degree of competence on leadership, professionalism, and dynamic decision makers; helping the students seek opportunities and advancement in landing jobs both in the government and private sector; equipping the students with adequate knowledge and skills in handling technical and administrative responsibilities with self-reliance, confidence and trust in their own firm; and developing the students to be faithful to their work and make them responsible citizens in any field of endeavor.

PRE-SCHOOL, ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOL

"He who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find Him the rest of the day." This is how Las Piñas College is seen, from the pre-elementary and elementary to the secondary level. LPC meets the educational needs of people in a fast changing environment with the Lord as its head, leading people confident and secured in the future. It envisions to produce excellent people who are smart, knowledgeable and aware of what is right and what is wrong.

The very foundation of the institution’s elementary and high school level for every child is to teach basic knowledge.

What is taught and how well it is taught will have a profound effect on how people feel about the school in the Pilar Village Community.

The foundation of education is built with confidence by creating a spirit in work, in which excellence thrives as one family; welcoming information that helps understand how well students actually learn everyday; planning for the year and each school day, follow and be guided by the plan; making sure that every student spends enough time on the right task as directed by the teachers; studying development in learning theories and apply what has been learned in the classroom to assure them, mastering the needed knowledge and skills; building parent support for what is done in the classroom; demonstrating the spirit of love and care as a commitment to every student not only to a chosen few but to all through the College’s academic, athletic and social action/outreach scholarships.

Finally, it is the Pre-School, Elementary and High School pride to the community and its neighborhood that LPC exercises connections with professional colleagues, citizens and students on quality Christian Education. The College is committed to share its hopes, its dreams and its vision to its constituents and to the nation!
