The traditional Filipino wardrobe ever since the Spanish colonial era, the Barong Tagalog, has evolved from a garment of inferiority into a garment of pride and integrity for Filipinos. It came from the phrase "Baro ng Tagalog" or it means "dress of the Tagalog" and often worn untucked and made of transparent material to delineated the Tagalogs from the Spaniards. However, because of the Filipinos' resilience and tenacity against tyranny, they ingeniously used pineapple leaves to weave the pinya jusi cloth of the barong, turning the outfit into such delicate material, of luminous silky rich mixture much finer than silk since the Spaniards restricted the Filipinos from using silk and other imported facbric for the Barong. They hand-embroidered the front with such exquisite abandon: Calado and hand-work all over to express sheer craftsmanship of the Filipinos over the colonizers. It became a symbol of power when the first President of the Philippines, Manuel Quezon, pronounced it as a Philippine national dress.
