More about Davao Del Norte Electric Cooperative

The Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative commonly known by its acronym “DANECO” is another form of cooperative organized on September 24, 1971 by virtue of the enactment of national laws more particularly Republic Act No. 6038 which was later amended by Presidential Decree No. 269, Presidential Decree No. 1645 and Letter of Instruction No. 38.

The coop was organized purposely to provide affordable, dependable and round-the-clock electricity not only in the urban areas but also in far-flung barangays and remote areas on an area coverage basis. Its noble mission is to improve the quality of Filipino lives through the developments brought by electricity.

The National electrification Administration (NEA) is mandated with difficult task to implement the rural electrification program of the government making the electric coops as partners in this pursuit. DANECO as one of the catalyst of this mission is a holder of Franchise Certificate Nos. 017 and 103 issued by the National Electrification Commission with a permit to operate for 50 years.

Through the years, DANECO is a recipient of various prestigious awards given by NEA for the excellent performance it has rendered to its member-consumers. It is categorized as an A+ Extra Large Cooperative and One of the Outstanding Electric Coops in the country. However, as 2004 open the gate for the restructured power industry, where unbundling of rates was implemented, the powerrates increased tremendously. Concomitant with the long circuit of lines constructed by the coop, the system’s loss went high more than the prescribed cap. The coop suffered from net losses. Thus, the category of the coop was affected, it slide to Category B. Eventually, the coop was classified also as Mega Large Coop.

Within its coverage area, DANECO successfully energized sixteen (16) municipalities and two (2) cities in two (2) provinces namely: Compostela Valley Province and Davao del Norte. Insatiable to such achievements, the coop must arm its operation with more improvements in order to emerge victorious in the future challenges under the restructured atmosphere in electric industry.
